Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
runner’s knee
Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS),commonly known as “runner’s knee,” is pain in front of the knee in and around the kneecap caused by overuse. Running or jumping sports put repetitive stress on the knee joint, which can cause irritation under the kneecap. Muscle imbalances or weaknesses can cause PFPS when the muscles around the hip and knee don’t keep the kneecap properly aligned.
Symptoms
The most common symptom of PFPS is a dull ache under the kneecap. In addition, your knee may catch when bending and you may experience a painful grating or creaking sensation.
PFPS does not go away on its own. If you have symptoms of PFP, it’s important to seek care from a physical therapist so you can return to the activities that you enjoy.
