What is Bowel Dysfunction?
(or What are Bowel Problems)?
Bowel problems include bowel incontinence, urgency, frequency, chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Signs & Symptoms
Bowel issues are quite embarrassing. You may have several bowel problems at the same time. Stool can sneak out of your anus and you are not aware this is happening or you may be someone who gets a sudden urge to have a bowel movement and are unable to control the stool before you make it to the bathroom. Some people complain that they are constipated and get bloated easily. Others report they have diarrhea.

How Can Pelvic Floor Therapy Help?
The occupational and physical therapists at Vita will work 1:1 with you to provide compassionate and confidential care to help you to take back control from your bowels There are no “typical” programs, as treatment is individualized. Therapy could include the following:
- Biofeedback to help you to visualize the pelvic floor muscles which are deep in your body.
- Manual therapy such as trigger point releases visceral mobilization, connective tissue manipulation and dry needling.
- Physiological quieting such as breathing techniques, meditation & Emotional Freedom Technique/ Tapping. These are all intended to improve your bowels.
- Dietary assessment to determine if you are drinking or eating anything that could be irritating your bowels.
- Lifestyle and health coaching. We use integrative and functional medicine approaches to look at how your daily habits affect your bowel movements. Some of these include how you are sleeping, how you handle stress and your activity level.
