Chronic Pain
While our physical therapists will treat your pain, they will also identify the cause of your discomfort and provide you with solutions to prevent the condition in the future.
Anyone can have chronic pain, and almost everyone will experience it at some point. Several factors increase your risk of developing back pain and can include:
- Fitness level: Back pain is more common among people who are not physically fit. For example, weak back and stomach muscles may not properly support the spine (core strength). Back pain is also more likely if you exercise too strenuously after being inactive (overdoing it).
- Weight gain: A diet high in calories and fat, combined with an inactive lifestyle, can lead to obesity. This can put stress on the back.
- Job-related risk factors: Jobs that require heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, or twisting can injure the back. A desk job may also play a role, especially if you have poor posture or sit in an uncomfortable chair all day.
- Stress level: If you chronically have poor sleep, depression, or anxiety, back pain can be more frequent and severe.
- Age: Pain becomes more common with age, particularly after age 45.
- Heredity: Genetics play a role in some disorders that cause back pain.

Conditions
Complex regional pain syndrome
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) falls under the umbrella category of chronic pain that impacts an arm or a leg. Symptoms can range from temperature sensitivity, pain, and swelling in the affected limb to muscle spasms, weakness, and stiffness in the joints.
Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain and tenderness in the muscles and soft tissues. People with fibromyalgia may also experience fatigue, sleep disturbances, headaches, cognitive difficulties, anxiety, and depression.
Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, progressive neurological disease affecting the motor system due to a lack of dopamine stored within the brain’s basal ganglia. The severity of Parkinson’s can vary drastically and affect individuals in different ways.
Osteoporosis
Bone is a living tissue that is constantly being broken down and replaced. Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and brittle — so brittle that a fall or mild stresses such as bending over or coughing can cause a fracture. Osteoporosis-related fractures most commonly occur in the hip, wrist, or spine.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that can affect the many tissues of the joint. It is the most common form of arthritis, affecting more than 32.5 million adults in the United States. OA can affect any joint, but typically affects hands, knees, hips, lower back and neck.
Balance problems
Balance problems can be a significant health concern, especially as people age. Problems with balance may result from neurological medical conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, medication side-effects, muscle weakness, joint stiffness and arthritis, and even inner ear issues.
Treatments
Manual Therapy
Manual therapy involves a range of hands-on techniques performed by our skilled therapists. These techniques aim to promote healing, improve mobility, reduce pain, and restore optimal function. With a personalized approach, our therapists utilize various manual therapy techniques to address specific needs and conditions.
Therapeutic Exercise and Activity
Therapeutic exercise and activity are modalities that play a crucial role in restoring function, improving strength, flexibility, and endurance, and promoting overall physical well-being. Therapeutic exercise is focused on addressing specific impairments and restoring strength and flexibility while therapeutic activity targets overall functional abilities and promotes independence in daily activities.
Neuromuscular Re-education
Neuromuscular re-education is a specialized technique to improve coordination, control, and function of muscles and nerves. Our therapists use this technique to restore proper muscle activation, improve balance and proprioception, and enhance overall movement quality. By stimulating the neuromuscular system, patients can regain functional abilities and improve their quality of life.
